An interesting tidbit that I failed to mention: many of the youth who come in to sign up for our GED classes are required to earn their GED by the terms of their parole. A good intention on the part of the parole officers (or whoever actually determines those terms), I’m sure; on the other hand, it means that some of the students aren’t even personally motivated to come in. They have no choice. They have about as much reason, in their own minds, to come study for the tests as the kids I saw dragged through our door by their mothers had to get a job on one of our summer crews. Even better, right?
